IOA forms Ad-Hoc Committee to run suspended TTFI: A six-month power transition under ITTF supervision

On September 17, 2026, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha signed an office order establishing a three-member ad-hoc committee to run the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), five weeks after the Sports Ministry suspended TTFI recognition from August 12, 2026. The committee is chaired by Indu Puri, a 73-year-old eight-time national champion; Namrata Chatterjee, a sports lawyer; and Dr. Andres Constantin, ITTF Governance Manager. It is described as a limited and time-bound interim sporting mechanism, formed in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The committee has an initial term of six months. Extension requires a written IOA decision plus prior written approval from ITTF. The committee may expand from three to a maximum of five members. Its mandate covers day-to-day administration, compliance, constitutional and electoral-structure review, transparent selection of teams and athletes, election oversight, uninterrupted athlete registrations and entries, and coordination with government agencies. The most notable structural detail is the direct presence of an ITTF governance official inside a national federation. This signals elevated oversight concern and strategic interest in India as a growth market. A visible gap is the absence of any currently active athlete representative on a committee that will oversee selection processes. Another risk is that the caretaker body cannot create permanent posts or irreversible financial commitments, which may constrain coaching appointments and youth-development investment during the transition. Key risks include: elections not being held within six months; three-way disagreement between IOA, the Ministry and ITTF; athletes missing international entry deadlines; and the undisclosed cause of the suspension.
